Research Project: Development of Next-Generation SuperSour Rootstocks With Tolerance to HLB

Location: Subtropical Insects and Horticulture Research

Project Number: 6034-21000-020-005-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2025

Objective:
New hybrids will be created to combine important rootstock traits, new replicated field trials will be planted, and field performance data will be collected from the trials each year. Many trials have already been planted with new hybrid rootstocks and data collected over multiple years. As sufficient performance information is available, superior new rootstock cultivars will be released.

Approach:
Objective 1. Collect field performance data from Stage 1 and 2 replicated rootstock field trials and release new rootstock cultivars as justified by superior performance in multiyear field trials. More than twelve Stage 1 trials with sweet orange scion and containing more than 300 next-generation SuperSour rootstocks will be used to collect annual performance information on tree survival, fruit yield, fruit quality, tree size, and tree health. Trials are established with multiple replications of each rootstock and using commercial standard rootstocks for comparison.
