Research Project: Diversifying Ecosystem Services in Dairy Forage Systems

Location: Dairy Forage Research

Project Number: 5090-21500-002-015-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2022
End Date: Feb 28, 2027

Objective:
Develop, integrate, and evaluate cropping system strategies, including the use of winter cover crop mixtures and flowering species, to diversify ecosystem services, such as providing pollinator forage resources and supporting beneficial insect populations, in dairy forage systems.

Approach:
Existing cover crop studies and new experiments will be developed to quantify a suite of ecosystem services provided by integrating conservation cropping system strategies in dairy forage systems. These include soil-derived services, beneficial insect and pollinator supporting and provisioning services, and forage production, and will allow for trade-off evaluations as well as economic assessments.
