Research Project: Pinyon and Juniper Ecophysiology in the Great Basin

Location: Great Basin Rangelands Research

Project Number: 2060-21500-001-008-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2022
End Date: May 31, 2023

Objective:
The cooperator will synthesize data sets of plant water use, stomatal conductance, soil moisture and weather data from multiple locations, to complete pinyon and juniper research. The ARS PI will provide datasets and lead manuscripts preparation.

Approach:
This project will synthesize data sets of plant water use, stomatal conductance, soil moisture and weather data from multiple locations. The cooperator and the ARS PI anticipate the following peer-reviewed papers to come from this project. i. Contrasts between co-occurring pinyon and juniper trees in response to drought and heat waves. ii. Relationships between plant water use strategies and time lags between stomatal sensitivity to vapor pressure deficit and heat events. iii. A conceptual relationship between maximum stomatal conductance and seasonal variation in stomatal sensitivity to aridity. Following publication, all data and modeling scripts will be uploaded to a data archive website for public access.
