Research Project: Breeding Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) Resistant Winter Wheat and Barley

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-126-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
We will develop Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistant and low DON germplasm and varieties for winter wheat and barley by introgressing QTLs from regional breeding programs, improving phenotypic screening at UNL, and developing improved genomic selection models for Type I and Type II resistance as well as low DON concentration.

Approach:
We will use germplasm exchange with regional programs to increase variation for Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistance. Lines developed through crossing will be subjected to inoculated phenotypic screening in mist nurseries for use as training data for genomic prediction models. These models will be used to improve selection in the breeding program.
