Research Project: High Fidelity/Temporal Detection of Field Fusarium Head Blight (FHB)

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-127-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2025

Objective:
1) Replicate, refine, and validate previously developed machine learning models for Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) severity in imaged wheat/barley plots. 2) Assess FHB severity for field plots multiple times a week using developed and tested FHB models. 3) Use high temporal FHB monitoring with environmental variables to understand FHB progression and forecast models.

Approach:
A rover will be used to capture images of field plots multiple times a week at two locations. The high resolution/temporal set of images will test and improve models to detect Fusarium Head Blight (FHB). This will be used to study FHB development throughout the season, which has not been achievable before.
