Research Project: Systematics of Insects and Mites: Plant Pests, Predators and Disease Vectors

Location: Systematic Entomology Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-22000-317-017-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2022
End Date: Jul 30, 2024

Objective:
To provide laboratory support for molecular-related research (e.g., Next-Gen and Sanger sequencing, DNA extraction) to further augment phylogenetic and systematic analysis of Insect and Acari.

Approach:
ARS will collect samples of insects and mites from both field and/or various museums. The Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of Natural History, Laboratories of Analytical Biology (LAB) using their state-of-art and high throughput equipment will extract, amplify, sequence, and analyze DNA from these samples for use in ongoing systematic studies of insects and mites. Results and data will be shared with ARS which will subsequently make it available to the scientific community.
