Location: Plant Physiology and Genetics Research
Project Number: 2020-21600-001-005-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Oct 1, 2022
End Date: Aug 31, 2025
Objective:
The overarching goal of the project is to sustainably increase productivity of rainfed agricultural systems in the Southern Great Plains region by increasing water and nitrogen (N) use efficiencies and reducing yield losses due to environmental stresses while enhancing soil health. The specific objectives of modeling team of the project is to 1) scale field experiments to regional scale to understand performance of current and aspirational systems, in terms of water and nitrogen use efficiency and soil carbon dynamics, under different climatic conditions, and 2) develop web-based in-season nitrogen recommendation tool to optimize nitrogen application in winter wheat systems.
Approach:
EPIC model will be spatially calibrated using spatial optimization approaches and measurement from field experiments. Calibrated model will be employed at regional scale to simulate crop yield, water use, nitrogen use efficiency and soil carbon under current and aspirational cropping systems. Further, web-based nitrogen recommendation tool will be developed using EPIC crop model and web development tools (i.e ReactJS, Open Street Maps, React-leaflet, NodeJS and SQL). We will engage with farmers to evaluate performance of the tool.
