Research Project: Integration of Advanced Technologies for Documenting the Impact of Climate-Induced Stress on Whole Potato Plant Growth and Development

Location: Small Grain and Food Crops Quality Research

Project Number: 3060-21430-009-014-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2022
End Date: Jul 31, 2026

Objective:
Main objective of this research is to help identify key factors impacting climate adaptability of potato cultivars using advanced technological systems throughout the potato growth season by integrating and optimizing: i) a portable environmental system to measure microclimatic conditions of the canopy and root zone; and ii) a non-destructive imaging system to monitor root, stolon, and tuber development of potato crop.

Approach:
Prototype environmental measurement and non-destructive imaging systems will be assembled and tested for continuously monitoring the micro-climatic conditions of above- and below-ground of plants throughout the growth season. The environmental measurement system will be optimized for recording air temperature, humidity, CO2 at the plant canopy level, and the soil moisture and temperature around the root area of the plants. The non-destructive imaging system will be optimized for documenting root, stolon, and tuber growth and development of the same plants throughout the potato production season. The prototype systems will be integrated for monitoring potato growth and development and recording micro-climatic data under controlled environmental conditions and standard potato production conditions in the field.
