Research Project: Investigating Alternative Protein Foods in the Dietary Guidelines

Location: Obesity and Metabolism Research

Project Number: 2032-51530-025-088-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
The objective is to facilitate the completion of human nutrition research studies at the USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS). This project supports research that investigates the impact of the USDA dietary Guidelines on human health and the role of alternative proteins in human health. Studies will include an intervention trial examining the effect of a diet following the Dietary Guidelines for Americans on metabolic health and studies utilizing animals, cell systems and/or human trials to evaluate the role of alternative proteins in a USDA DGA food pattern.

Approach:
UC Davis will support clinical studies conducted at ARS by employing and providing technical and medical personnel required for research on humans. These may include, but are not limited to, a Human Studies manager; research dietitians and metabolic kitchen personnel; personnel with specialized training in clinical procedures such as phlebotomy, body composition analysis, and exercise physiology; Clinical Nurses obtained from the UC Davis Medical Center, and recruiters or Clinical Research Coordinators with expertise in recruitment of volunteers. UC Davis Medical Center will analyze blood samples to screen subjects for eligibility as study participants.
