Research Project: Agricultural Vulnerability Assessment for the Northeast

Location: Food Systems Research Unit

Project Number: 8090-44000-001-005-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Aug 10, 2023
End Date: Aug 31, 2025

Objective:
This agreement will support a collaboration to update an earlier report on the vulnerability of Northeast agriculture and forestry climate change. This agreement has four objectives: 1. Identify key knowledge gaps regarding how Northeast agriculture and forestry sectors can adapt to expected changes in climate and contribute to mitigation efforts. 2. Determine key questions to pursue in future food systems research to address knowledge gaps in how Northeast agriculture and forestry systems can adapt to climate change and mitigate emissions. 3. Set a foundation for identifying practical and cost-effective methods for increasing farm and forest resilience to climate variability and change. 4. Increase the value of the Cooperator's and the Agency's research information for education and outreach.

Approach:
In partnership with the Cooperator, the Agency will write a comprehensive assessment of climate impacts to regional agriculture, forestry and aquaculture production. This assessment will be called the "Northeast Regional Vulnerability Assessment," and it will update an earlier report published in 2016. To produce this vulnerability assessment, the Cooperator and the Agency will review current knowledge of agricultural and forest susceptibility to climate variability in the Northeast.
