Research Project: RCN: Reimagining a Sustainable Data Network to Accelerate Agricultural Research and Discovery

Location: Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research

Project Number: 5030-21000-071-021-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Sep 1, 2024

Objective:
Specific Objectives: Objective 1: Multiple working groups within the AgBioData and agricultural research community will develop recommendations, standards and implementation plans for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) data management data. Objective 2: Expand the network to include key stakeholders including researchers, funders and publishers and work with them to refine and implement standards. Objective 3: Develop educational materials for training researchers about FAIR data standards and best practices. Objective 4: Develop a vision for an Agriculture-related Database Network that provides a unified and sustainable framework for data discovery and reuse while still serving the individual needs of distinct stakeholder groups.

Approach:
Approach for Objective 1: ARS and Cooperators will facilitate an annual 3-day (3 hour/ day) on-line think tank workshop using small break out groups to encourage small working group discussions to identify, prioritize and implement FAIR data standards. During these workshops the attendees will identify priority issues in data and metadata standardization, and develop recommendations, standards and implementation plans for the following issues: gene/ genome nomenclature; pan-genome methods and standards and recommendations for emerging data types.
