Research Project: Develop and Evaluate a Site-specific Climate Downscaling Tool for Climatic Impact Assessment

Location: Agroclimate and Hydraulics Research Unit

Project Number: 3070-13000-015-048-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2022
End Date: Sep 30, 2025

Objective:
The Cooperator will help develop, evaluate, and fine tune a site-specific climate downscaling tool for assessing the impacts of climate change on crop production and soil erosion. Specifically, the Cooperator will help improve the tool for simulating storm intensification under climate change and maintain the program codes.

Approach:
The Cooperator will help assess climate projections by Global Circulation Models (GCMs), Regional Climate Models (RCMs), and other statistically downscaled projections for their ability in simulating storm intensification under climate change. The selected models or data sources will be used to extract storm intensification signals, which will be used to modify the probability distribution function of daily precipitation amounts used in the tool. The skewness coefficient, which largely determines the frequency and magnitude of large storms, will be modified to reflect storm intensification under climate change.
