Research Project: Life After the Flood: Disrupting Rice Farming by Integrating Automated, LoT-Irrigation Technologies into a Low-Water-Use Production System

Location: Delta Water Management Research

Project Number: 6024-13000-004-066-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 15, 2022
End Date: Aug 14, 2025

Objective:
To determine the effects of integrating automated, IoT-irrigation technologies into an AWD rice production system on water use, rice productivity, and economic viability.

Approach:
Conduct on-farm research in Mississippi and Arkansas that integrates Internet of Things (IOT) communications with irrigation automation technologies to optimally manage alternate wetting and drying rice flood as a means to reduce aquifer withdrawals. Water savings, rice grain quantity and quality, and economic returns of the automated AWD rice irrigation system compared to conventional rice production systems will be determined.
