Research Project: Row Crop Production under Climate Change – Assessment of Sustainable Management Practices for Plant and Soil Health

Location: Crop Genetics Research

Project Number: 6066-21220-015-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Aug 31, 2027

Objective:
1. Evaluate the effect of long-term management practices for plant health. 2. Monitor frogeye leaf spot and charcoal rot as well as plant-parasitic nematodes.

Approach:
We conduct various management practice trials and soil amendment tests in sand deposited fields. We will collect agronomic and environmental soil function data to analyze climate-driven long-term yield dynamics across the management systems to identify management scenarios with greater potential of maintaining productivity under stress (i.e., weather extremes). We will also conduct multi-year monitoring of soil hydrology and soil resilience parameters before, during and after weather stress conditions to understand the underlying management-induced mechanisms.
