Location: Sustainable Perennial Crops Laboratory
Project Number: 8042-21000-303-010-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Aug 31, 2027
Objective:
The objective of this agreement is to conduct genome sequencing and diversity analysis of the plant species Asimina triloba. This will include collection of living tissue, DNA and RNA extraction, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics analysis. These data will be used to provide the first high quality draft genome assembly for the American pawpaw. These data will allow identification of unique genomic variations from diverse pawpaw individuals which will be used for landscape genomics analyses of different pawpaw varieties, allowing us to link genomic variations of the different sequenced individuals to environmental conditions such as temperature, rainfall, etc. This agreement will formalize the research collaboration between Cooperator and USDA/ARS to facilitate the objectives stated above.
Approach:
The Cooperator under will collect pawpaw leaf and tissue samples, extract DNA and RNA from the samples, and sequence the extracted DNA and RNA. ARS will conduct bioinformatic analysis of the sequencing results provided by the Cooperator, including genome assembly, annotation, and diversity analyses.
All rights, title, and interest in inventions made under this Agreement solely by employees of ARS shall be owned by ARS. Any invention made jointly under this Agreement by at least one employee of the Cooperator and at least one employee of ARS shall be jointly owned. Any invention made under this Agreement solely by individuals employed by the Cooperator shall be owned by the Cooperator, provided ARS is granted a royalty-free, nonexclusive, irrevocable license to use the invention for U.S. Government purposes. Each party will disclose new inventions to the other party under confidentiality agreements as practical after discovery.
