Research Project: Developing a Collection Management System for ARS Collections

Location: Floral and Nursery Plants Research

Project Number: 8020-21000-081-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2022
End Date: Sep 14, 2025

Objective:
The objectives of this project are to develop a software platform code base and develop a strategy and solutions for hosting and co-managing custom-configured Symbiota biodiversity data portals and related digital assets such as images and other media files.

Approach:
Cooperator will work with ARS to create a new, USDA collections-themed Symbiota portal; configure the portal to hold USDA collections data and integrate images (and other associated digital assets); and provide expertise to the USDA collections community to enable ARS to co-manage the collections and to produce value-added products that meet the USDA's requirements and goals. The Cooperator may install the ARS collections portal on USDA-owned and -managed IT infrastructure, through effective collaboration with USDA IT personnel that insures all data and images are held in accordance with agency requirements. The code base and portal configurations can be created and maintained in a cooperator-operated, open-source GitHub repository so that newly optimized portal features may have a wider domain of application to benefit other portal communitiee.
