Location: Plant Physiology and Genetics Research
Project Number: 2020-21600-001-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Oct 31, 2025
Objective:
Model major cropping systems cultivated in the U.S at finer resolution to understand the impacts of current management practices on regional crop yields, water use, and carbon and nitrogen dynamics under current and future climatic conditions.
Approach:
The Cooperator and ARS will collaborate in the modeling activities to understand the implications with current agricultural practices on crop yields, water use, and carbon and nitrogen dynamics at regional scale under different climatic conditions. The spatial data products required for the implementation of process-based crop models will be produced using satellite remote sensing methods. These products will be used to optimize the model configuration and produce model inputs. Further, modeling framework will be implemented at multiple spatial scales under different climatic conditions, to estimate crop yields, water use, carbon and nitrogen fluxes for corn, soybeans, winter wheat, cotton and rice cultivated from 2017-2022.
