Research Project: Treatment of Wastewater with Nanobubbles for Safe Reuse

Location: Water Management and Conservation Research

Project Number: 2020-13000-005-011-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2022
End Date: Oct 15, 2025

Objective:
Evaluate the potential to use nanobubbles to treat wash water from cut lettuce packaging facilities.

Approach:
We will evaluate the impact of NB gas type (ozone vs air), pH, carbonate, calcium and temperature on washing lettuce with NBs and the subsequent filterability of the washed water. We will employ a membrane-based NB generator. The system has a special ozone resistant membrane that allows generating ozone nanobubbles in addition to oxygen, air, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen.
