Research Project: Replicated Evaluation of Advanced Hop Germplasm and Determination of Virus and Viroid Transmissibility in Hop Breeding

Location: Forage Seed and Cereal Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-21000-061-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Oct 31, 2024

Objective:
Develop new populations segregating for various traits of interest in hop. Evaluate families in replicated trials, make selections, and expand selected genotypes via propagation. Determine the transmissibility of important viruses and viroids via sexual reproduction in hops.

Approach:
Hop plant material will be propagated in a misting greenhouse. Rooted cuttings will be used for transplanting and evaluation in the field. Leaf tissue, pollen, seeds, and progeny plantlets from males and females will be provided in the annual crossing scheme for virus and viroid testing. Plant materials from at least ten crosses will be tested. Viruses and viroids present in each of the various plant samples will be identified and quantified. Data will be analyzed and results interpreted for use and publication.
