Research Project: Sustainable Soils for Healthy Communities and Climate Resilience in the Semi-Arid West

Location: Agricultural Systems Research

Project Number: 3032-13210-008-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2023
End Date: Dec 31, 2024

Objective:
Develop, quantify, and disseminate integrated management strategies that benefit soil health and support sustainable, profitable crop production in semi-arid agricultural regions, using state of the art observation of soil moisture dynamics to improve crop condition and foster climate resilience.

Approach:
In alignment with the strategic vision of the ARS Northern Plains Agricultural Research Laboratory, the Cooperator will conduct research and extension activities that (1) combine well-established and emerging remote sensing technologies with precision soil monitoring to detect, model, and disseminate information to improve soil health and mitigate the impact of climate on crop and forage resources; and (2) assess the impacts of dryland crop management practices such as stubble height management and alternative crops at small and large scales by connecting long-term and forthcoming satellite records with existing agricultural weather network and soil moisture sensor networks in Montana and North Dakota.
