Research Project: 2023-2024 USDA Survey of Dioxin and Dioxin-like Compounds in Beef, Pork, and Siluriformes

Location: Food Animal Metabolism Research

Project Number: 3060-32420-003-011-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Feb 15, 2023
End Date: May 15, 2025

Objective:
To quantify 17 toxic dioxins and furans, 3 co-planar PCBs, and16 brominated flame retardants in approximately 450 beef, pork, and siluriform samples in support of an FSIS survey of the US meat supply.

Approach:
The USDA ARS will conduct dioxin analysis on approximately 450 fat, liver, and muscle samples from steer/heifer, market hog, and siluriform samples collected by the USDA FSIS for the survey. The analysis includes sample purification and quantification of 17 toxic dioxins and furans and 3 co-planar PCBs by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry methods. All compounds can be isolated from a single purification procedure. The analytical method is based on EPA Method 1613 “Tetra- through octa-chlorinated dioxins and furans by isotope dilution HRGC/HRMS”. The project will follow the same Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) implemented for the 2002-2003, 2007-2008, 2012-2013, and 2018-2019 surveys, with minor revisions to reflect changes in personnel and software.
