Research Project: Human Milk Volume Measurement by the Deuterated Water Method in the E-MILQ

Location: Obesity and Metabolism Research

Project Number: 2032-51530-025-096-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2023
End Date: Jul 1, 2024

Objective:
The saliva samples from 65 mother - infant dyads at each site at 3 time-points for the total 2470 sample sets will be analyzed by Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). To assess the volume of breast milk intake by breastfed infants in the “Early Mothers, Infants and Lactation Quality or E-MILQ study”.

Approach:
For the proposed project, the institute’s investigator will analyze the anonymized serial infant and mother saliva samples to assess the volume of infant breast milk intake from 3 different study sites (Bangladesh, Denmark, and the Gambia) by using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). This analysis is pursuant to St. John’s being a collaborating centre for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of the United Nations, and this activity is through that Collaborating Centre.
