Research Project: Risk Assessment of Emerging Diseases Caused by Pantoea spp. on Rice, Peanut, and Corn in the USA in Collaboration with Colorado State University

Location: Dale Bumpers National Rice Research Center

Project Number: 6028-21000-012-007-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2023
End Date: May 31, 2024

Objective:
To investigate distribution, relatedness and pathogenicity of Pantoea in rice, corn, peanut in Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma.

Approach:
The cooperator at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, will develop a rapid diagnostic test for Pantoea on rice. This will involve the identification of specific genetic markers for the pathogen and the development of a rapid and reliable Polymerase Chain Reaction-based diagnostic assay under controlled disease evaluation methods for rice. This will involve studying how Pantoea is distributed on seed surfaces and evaluating methods for effectively disinfecting seeds to prevent the spread of the pathogen.
