Research Project: Effectiveness of Transgenic Crops Expressing Vegetatively-produced Bt Toxins for Heliothine Control

Location: Southern Insect Management Research

Project Number: 6066-22000-091-014-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2023
End Date: Apr 30, 2028

Objective:
Evaluate the effects of crops producing vegetative Bt toxins on fitness and survival of heliothine pests.

Approach:
Heliothine pest survival and damage on different transgenic Bt crops will be compared using research plots in combination with laboratory bioassays. Research will include corn earworm and tobacco budworm comparisons, as well as other pests that are targeted by transgenic crops. Behavioral characteristics of targeted pests surviving in field plots and/or laboratory bioassays will be evaluated using various tactics.
