Research Project: Characterizing Plant- and Virus-Derived Proteins in Important Crops that Enhance the Resistance to White Mold

Location: Application Technology Research

Project Number: 5082-21000-001-075-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 26, 2023
End Date: Jul 25, 2024

Objective:
The scope of the project is to identify novel small peptides derived from plants or viruses that have anti-fungal properties. ARS and the cooperator will oversee and guide all aspects of this project.

Approach:
We will compare the antifungal activities of selected plant- and virus-derived molecules through transient over-expression in plants. We will establish the Bacillus subtilis secretory protein expression system for the expression and secretion of promising proteins as cell-free filtrates. We will then test the efficacy of bacterial cell-free filtrates containing the expressed proteins as sprays in the greenhouse to enhance resistance.
