Project Number: 3050-21600-001-107-M
Project Type: Memorandum of Understanding

Start Date: Jun 20, 2023
End Date: Sep 30, 2024

Objective:
The detail of Dr. Herrick to DOS supports several strategic USDA and Agricultural Research Service (ARS) goals and allows for coordinated activities to deliver efficient and effective assistance. Dr. Herrick liaises with senior leadership in DOS and USDA to ensure inclusion and coordination of agriculture-related policies involving climate change, food security, foreign and food assistance, and expansion of international marketing opportunities for U.S. agricultural products.

Approach:
Dr. Herrick will work with USDA and DOS leadership to provide USDA input into policy decisions that affect U.S. agriculture. The detail directly supports the following USDA strategic goals: Combat Climate Change to Support America’s Working Lands, Natural Resources and Communities and Foster an Equitable and Competitive Marketplace for All Agricultural Producers. Activities supporting these goals include supporting the implementation of the Climate-Smart Agriculture Partnership Initiative, expanding markets for emerging technologies, and expanding international marketing opportunities through delivery of technical assistance and capacity building. He will focus in particular on translating science into actions that are communicated both domestically and internationally, and increase USDA access to global research that will directly benefit American producers and consumers.
