Research Project: Calibrating Current NE Action Thresholds with Lure-Baited Trap Catch

Location: Temperate Tree Fruit and Vegetable Research

Project Number: 2092-22430-003-054-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2021
End Date: Jun 30, 2025

Objective:
1. Use plant volatile baited monitoring traps to describe NE communities in orchard ecosystems. 2. Compare capture of several key species of NEs in lure-baited traps with numbers measured from standard scouting techniques. 3. Establish action (or in-action) thresholds for key NEs.

Approach:
From May-September of each year (2021-2023), we will sample 3 commercial pear orchards in the Yakima Valley area once weekly. The co-PIs will sample complementary sites in their region. Each orchard will have 5 traps baited with a plant volatile lure. The grant funded technician will count the natural enemies and pear psylla collected on each trap and provide this data to the collaborator (Adams, OSU) for the development of natural enemy based thresholds. We will also obtain scouting records from the grower for each orchard to provide to the collaborator.
