Research Project: Assessing the Effects of Conservation Practices on Crop Yield, Water Quality, and Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the U.S. Corn Belt

Location: Soil, Water & Air Resources Research

Project Number: 5030-11610-006-011-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2023
End Date: Mar 31, 2027

Objective:
Incorporate soil carbon and nitrogen cycling algorithms of the Denitrification/Decomposition (DNDC) model with the Soil Watershed Assessment Tool (SWAT) to simulate soil organic matter decomposition, dissolved organic carbon generation, and greenhouse gas emissions. Evaluate the model using historical data and new high temporal resolution field data.

Approach:
After model is modified by cooperator, it will be tested using field data collected near Ames, IA (Kelley Drainage Field Plots, KDFP) and using data from the Walnut Creek Watershed and South Fork Iowa River Watershed. ARS will collect high temporal resolution nitrous oxide emission data using automatic chambers to allow for robust model evaluation for ARS in collaboration with the cooperator.
