Research Project: Genomic Sequencing and Assembly of Graminicolous Downy Mildews

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 2038-22000-019-042-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2023
End Date: Oct 31, 2025

Objective:
If introduced into the USA graminicolous downy mildew plant pathogens could have a significant impact on a wide range of graminicolous crops either by their direct effect on plant health and yield reductions or indirectly with regulatory restrictions on the movement/shipment of plant material intended to prevent pathogen introduction or spread. Current detection techniques do not adequately fulfill the need for sensitive, accurate, rapid and cost effective detection of these pathogens, which hinders efforts at disease management. This work will address this by expanding a current research project on molecular detection of graminicolous downy mildew species to include additional species. The collaboration established in this agreement will provide support for this objective by sharing expertise with the pathogens and generating DNA sequence data that will be useful for developing diagnostic markers.

Approach:
The collaborator in this proposal will generate DNA sequence data from a wide range of graminicolous downy mildews that will be used to design and validate molecular diagnostic markers for economically important species.
