Research Project: Impact of Crop Growth Environment and Postharvest Storage Conditions on Physiological Age of Seed Tubers and Their Yield Performance

Location: Small Grain and Food Crops Quality Research

Project Number: 3060-21430-009-018-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2023
End Date: Oct 31, 2024

Objective:
Investigate the impact of crop growth environment and postharvest storage conditions on physiological aging of potato seed tubers.

Approach:
Investigate the preharvest heat stress on physiological aging of potato seed tubers in the field, determining effect of different postharvest storage temperatures on physiological aging, sprouting and tuber yield of potato seed tubers, and identifying effective biomarkers to determine physiological age of potato tubers during harvest and postharvest storage. 1. Carry out field research and screening of potato cultivars to determine the effect of heat stress on physiological aging of potato seed tubers. 2. Research to identify biomarkers determining physiological age of potato seed tubers. 3. Supporting research efforts to investigate effect of storage temperature on sprouting, growth and tuber yield at harvest. 5. Contribute preparation of a final report to distribute the results.
