Research Project: Water Quality Improvement and Pathogen Reduction by Peracetic Acid (PAA) in Trout Culture

Location: Harry K. Dupree Stuttgart National Aquaculture Research Cntr

Project Number: 6028-31630-009-009-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 22, 2023
End Date: May 22, 2026

Objective:
To measure growth parameters, water quality improvement and pathogen reduction when using peracetic acid in trout culture.

Approach:
Cooperator and ARS will use peracetic acid (PAA) as a water disinfect treatment to determine its effects on water quality and health, growth and overall production of rainbow trout. Trout will be treated with 1 mg/L PAA on Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week for the duration of the study. Parameters to be measured include water quality (Dissolved Oxygen, Oxidative-Reductive Potential, Total Ammonia-Nitrogen, pH, alkalinity/hardness), visual fish health assessment, histopathology of gills and eyes, and growth parameters (weight, length and feed conversion ratio).
