Research Project: Native American Soil Health Collaborative: Strengthening Soil Health Efforts among Indigenous Communities

Location: Dairy Forage Research

Project Number: 5090-21500-002-034-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2023
End Date: Jul 31, 2025

Objective:
The ARS PI and the Cooperator will work collaboratively to: Objective 1: Expand soil health knowledge among Tribal communities. Objective 2: Support soil health demonstration and research sites across Tribal and other communities of color. Objective 3: Strengthen partnerships across the Midwest Farmers of Color Soil Health Network and outside partners.

Approach:
Four activities to address the objectives outlined above. For Objective 1: provide support through various workshops and educational sessions to address much-needed education on soil health principles and practices among Indigenous growers and the broader Tribal communities. For Objective 2: build upon existing relationships and work in several Wisconsin Tribal communities by supporting demonstration and research sites in Tribal communities. This will offer a unique opportunity for partners to implement and share innovative efforts to improve soil health by integrating cover crops and animals into Indigenous crop production. Demonstration sites will also offer a unique opportunity for field days and general outreach to their own communities and others. For Objective 3: facilitate meetings, field days, and other events that will connect Indigenous farmers and other farmers of color in the Upper Midwest with each other and also with organizations conducting work to support soil health efforts. This will include hosting tours for farmers of the Midwest Farmers of Color Soil Health network at various members' farms.
