Research Project: Understanding Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Irrigated Row Crop Systems

Location: Delta Water Management Research

Project Number: 6024-13000-004-072-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 2, 2023
End Date: Oct 1, 2025

Objective:
1. Quantify CO2, N2O and CH4 emissions in irrigated crop systems managed under conventional and conservation practices. 2. Assess methods to quantify greenhouse gas fluxes from agricultural fields using different gas analyzers and sensors.

Approach:
We will use the vented flux chamber technique and various sensors to measure fluxes of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane from agricultural fields. Samples collected with static vented chambers will be analyzed for atmospheric gases using a gas chromatograph equipped with three detectors, gas analyzers and sensors. These measurements will take place in several fields cultivated in various crops under conventional and innovative irrigation practices. Innovative irrigation practices include but are not limited to alternate wetting and drying, conventional, and furrow irrigated practice.
