Research Project: Measuring and Monitoring Environmental Variables that Impact Agroecosystem Resilience

Location: Dairy Forage Research

Project Number: 5090-21500-002-037-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2023
End Date: Jul 31, 2028

Objective:
ARS and the Cooperator will work collaboratively to measure and monitor environmental data at the ARS farm in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, and make the resulting information accessible online.

Approach:
Monitoring environmental variables such as precipitation, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, relative humidity, solar radiation, soil moisture, and air quality is critical for developing relationships with crop and livestock health and production and overall agroecosystem resilience. Cooperator will install a weather station at the ARS farm in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin (Sauk County), and will monitor data, perform calibrations, and repair equipment as necessary to ensure high quality data is recorded. The weather station will complement a network of weather stations across Wisconsin and will provide much-needed environmental data that is publicly available to growers, other practitioners, conservation professionals, and the public within Sauk County.
