Research Project: Climate Resilient Intensification Strategies for Forage Production with Small Grains and Millets

Location: Dairy Forage Research

Project Number: 5090-21500-002-038-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2023
End Date: Jul 31, 2028

Objective:
The ARS PIs and the Cooperator will work collaboratively to evaluate the effect of planting date on pearl millet forage production and nutritive value.

Approach:
Pearl millet is a drought tolerant type of millet that can produce high quality feed. Pearl millet will be planted at various planting dates following winter oats, winter triticale, or no previous small grain crop grown for forage from May through June. Season-long forage yield, as well as the yield of each small grain crop, will allow us to evaluate the most productive strategy for integrating pearl millet into small-grain based forage systems. In addition, nutritive value will be assessed from each system.
