Research Project: Single Cell Encapsulation of Entomopathogenic Fungi via Pickering Emulsions Toward A Highly Functional Biocompatible System

Location: Fruit and Tree Nut Research

Project Number: 6042-22000-024-028-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Nov 1, 2023
End Date: Nov 1, 2026

Objective:
1: Development of stable eco-friendly oil in water (o/w) Pickering emulsions. 2: Implementation of the studied Pickering emulsions for the development of formulations for fungal biopesticides with single cell encapsulation. 3. Quantify effects of plant exposure to entomopathogenic nematode cues on plant resistance to pests and plant recruitment of beneficial organisms.

Approach:
In the laboratory, bioassays, novel formulations based on nanoparticles will be tested for UV tolerance and pest control efficacy. Potential target pests include pecan weevil, peachtree borer, thrips and whiteflies. Small scale field or greenhouse trials will follow.
