Research Project: Novel Insecticide Delivery and Formulation for Resistance Management in Zoonotic Disease Vectors

Location: Arthropod-borne Animal Diseases Research

Project Number: 3020-32000-018-019-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 1, 2024
End Date: Jan 31, 2026

Objective:
Current insecticide formulations are prone to insecticide resistance development and application methods used are short term and may miss certain target organisms, such as biting midges. The aim of this research is to develop novel insecticide formulations and delivery mechanisms that will improve the efficacy of insecticide applications.

Approach:
Cooperator will develop novel insecticide formulations using nanoparticles as a delivery mechanism and provide this material to ARS to test on colony Culicoides sonorensis biting midges. Midges will be exposed to the novel formulation over several generations to test for the development of insecticide resistance.
