Research Project: Plant Exploration in the State of Michigan to Collect Malus Coronaria Germplasm for Crop Improvement

Location: National Germplasm Resources Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-21000-302-002-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 30, 2023
End Date: Sep 29, 2024

Objective:
1. Collect germplasm of Malus coronaria (a wild relative of apple) for the USDA National Plant Germplasm System. 2. Document the germplasm accessions collected. 3. Deposit the germplasm collected in the USDA National Plant Germplasm System.

Approach:
Germplasm of Malus coronaria will be collected from wild populations in Michigan. All collections will be documented with locality, latitude and longitude, elevation, plant description and growing environment. Herbarium voucher specimens will be made as appropriate. Fruits will be transported to Michigan State University, where seed will be extracted, sterilized, and dried. Seed will be sent to the apple repository of the USDA National Plant Germplasm System. Herbarium specimens will be sent to the USDA National Arboretum and the Michigan State University Herbarium. A detailed trip report, including information on all samples obtained, will be provided to ARS.
