Research Project: Plant Exploration in Central Vietnam to Collect Rutaceae Germplasm for Crop Improvement

Location: National Germplasm Resources Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-21000-302-003-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 30, 2023
End Date: Sep 30, 2024

Objective:
1. Obtain germplasm of Citrus crop wild relatives and landraces in Vietnam for the USDA National Plant Germplasm System and the Vietnamese National Genebank. 2. Document the crop wild relatives and landraces collected in Vietnam.

Approach:
Permission for collection of germplasm will be obtained from the national government in Vietnam, in collaboration with Vietnamese cooperators at the Vietnamese National Genebank. U.S. scientists will work closely with these cooperators to plan and conduct the collections. Population surveys of wild plants will be conducted in advance to determine when fruits will be mature. Fruits will be collected and kept separate for each sampled tree. Complete documentation, including herbarium voucher specimens, will be done. Seeds will be removed from fruits after collection. In some cases, vegetative germplasm samples will be made. The U.S. portion of the samples will be shipped to the U.S. following phytosanitary regulations. After inspection by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, germplasm will be shipped to the USDA-ARS Citrus germplasm repository in Riverside, California for quarantine.
