Research Project: Ecosystem Responses and Plant Ecophysiology in the Great Basin

Location: Great Basin Rangelands Research

Project Number: 2060-21500-001-019-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2023
End Date: Jul 1, 2025

Objective:
The cooperator will continue and expand current, ongoing work to synthesize data sets applicable to long-term vegetation dynamics and associated impacts on watershed and ecosystem processes in the Porter Canyon Experimental Watershed. The ARS PI will provide datasets and lead manuscripts preparation.

Approach:
Data sets will be compiled, quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) processed, and archived. Data sets will include, but are not necessarily limited to, plant water use (leaf to stand scale), stomatal conductance, soil moisture and temperature, water potential, allometry and stand density, meteorology, phenology and all other data sets of relevance as determined by the ARS PI. The cooperator and the ARS PI anticipate the following peer-reviewed papers to come from this project. 1. Contrasts in water use dynamics between co-occurring pinyon and juniper trees in response to atmospheric vapor pressure deficit and available soil moisture 2. Relationships between plant water use strategies and time lags between stomatal sensitivity to vapor pressure deficit and heat events 3. A conceptual relationship between maximum stomatal conductance and seasonal variation in stomatal sensitivity to aridity Following publication, all data and modeling scripts will be uploaded to a data archive website for public access.
