Research Project: Plant Exploration in the Northeast United States to Collect Ash Tree Germplasm

Location: National Germplasm Resources Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-21000-302-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2023
End Date: Dec 31, 2024

Objective:
1. Collect germplasm of Fraxinus nigra (a native ash tree) for the USDA National Plant Germplasm System. 2. Document the germplasm accessions collected. 3. Deposit the germplasm collected in the USDA National Plant Germplasm System.

Approach:
Germplasm of Fraxinus nigra will be collected from wild populations in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. All collections will be documented with locality, latitude and longitude, elevation, plant description and growing environment. Herbarium voucher specimens will be made as appropriate. Seeds will be transported to the USDA Plant Germplasm Quarantine Center in Beltsville, MD for inspection and subsequently sent to the Ash Conservation Project of the USDA National Plant Germplasm System, where it will be maintained. Herbarium specimens will be deposited at the USDA National Arboretum and the Native Plant Trust. A detailed trip report, including information on all samples obtained, will be provided to ARS.
