Research Project: Breeding and Screening Soybean for Mature Seed Damage

Location: Crop Genetics Research

Project Number: 6066-21220-016-012-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2023
End Date: Sep 30, 2024

Objective:
To develop soybean cultivars with improved tolerance to mature seed damage.

Approach:
ARS SYs will continue to make crosses to develop breeding lines that will be evaluated for seed damage. Traits in these lines that may contribute to lower seed damage include Phomopsis resistance, hardseededness, and heat tolerance. A replicated field nursery (USDA Nursery) with supplemental overhead irrigation provided by sprinklers and manual inoculation with spores of Phomopsis longicolla will be used to screen for mature seed damage on late harvested plants. Seed damage will be graded by Federal Grain Inspection Service certified inspectors. Selections will be yield tested, including advancement to the Uniform Soybean Tests, Southern States to gain sufficient data to justify releases and material transfer agreements among the breeders in the grant.
