Research Project: Development of an Automated and Integrated Mobile System (AIMS) for Apple Harvest and In-field Sorting - Michigan State University

Location: Sugarbeet and Bean Research

Project Number: 5050-43640-003-014-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2023
End Date: Jul 14, 2027

Objective:
The objectives of this agreement are to evaluate and demonstrate the Automated and Integrated Mobile System (AIMS) in diverse commercial orchard systems including use of different operational strategies, in Michigan, and disseminate the technologies to growers and packers through extension and outreach activities.

Approach:
Cooperator will work with ARS PI and other members to conduct field tests and demonstrations for the robotic harvester (module only) and Automated and Integrated Mobile System (AIMS),in commercial orchards in Michigan, to evaluate efficacy of robotic harvester and in-field pre- sorting technology in high-density apple orchard systems. Cooperator will also provide in-person and virtual extension programming on harvesting technology in orchards and results from field tests of AIMS technology in commercial production systems. In conjunction with education programming, Cooperator will evaluate grower and industry perception and potential adoption of AIMS technology for use in the tree fruit industry. Finally, Cooperator work with other members of the project to partner with K-12 educators and university programs to teach students about the impact of technology in agriculture and orchard systems and mentor young scientists and students in higher education.
