Objective:
Develop continued functionality and expanded content of a publicly accessible comprehensive cotton database with the purpose of preserving and disseminating information that contributes to an increased understanding and improvement of cotton.
Approach:
The CottonGen database was developed and maintained by Mainlab Bioinformatics at Washington State University (WSU). CottonGen will consolidate the data from CottonDB and the Cotton Marker Database, which includes sequences, genetic and physical maps, genotypic and phenotypic markers and polymorphisms, QTLs, pathogens, germplasm collections and trait evaluations, pedigrees, and relevant bibliographic citations. It has been largely expanded to include annotated transcriptome, genome sequence, marker-trait-locus and breeding data, as well as enhanced tools for easy querying and visualizing research data. It will faciliate community communication and collaboration through housing the ICGI website and mailing lists. CottonGen uses a drupal database and sophisticated web technologies to provide online accessibility to public cotton genetic resources.
CottonGen is a critical resource for cotton research in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS). All technical efforts involving the development and maintenance of the database will be the responsibility WSU. A steering committee for CottonGen has been created. Steering Committee input will be used to guide development directions and needs. The CottonGen steering committee will assist in database oversight activities and provide guidance and feedback as to its content.
