Research Project: CAP: Evaluation of Promising, HLB-Resistant/Tolerant Citrus Scion Hybrids Generated by Breeding

Location: Citrus and Other Subtropical Products Research

Project Number: 6034-21000-019-007-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2023
End Date: Aug 14, 2026

Objective:
The objective of the current research is focused on developing novel citrus hybrids that will be acceptable to the public, show disease resistance/tolerance traits in HLB endemic areas, and identify hybrids that can be developed as cultivars for future plantings.

Approach:
Greenhouse and field trials will be conducted in Florida to evaluate novel hybrid material developed by the University of CA, Riverside cooperators. Twenty-four selected F1 and back-cross hybrids will be evaluated in TX and FL in the field to evaluate their HLB resistance traits when exposed to an endemic population as well as through greenhouse evaluations following psyllid inoculation of young trees. Results will be extended to citrus growers as they are generated.
