Research Project: Barberry Testing (FY24)

Location: Cereal Disease Lab

Project Number: 5062-21220-025-029-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2023
End Date: Sep 30, 2024

Objective:
Conduct surveys and determine resistance of barberry species and cultivars to the cereal stem rust pathogen Puccinia graminis and develop improved methods of inducing germination of P. graminis teliospores and inoculation of barberry plants.

Approach:
Evaluate cultivars for symptoms of rust infection 1-2 weeks after inoculation and certify new cultivars as resistant if they show no symptoms of rust infection. Telia of Puccinia graminis from cereal crops and grass accessory hosts will be collected in late fall, exposed to various overwintering conditions and treatments, and tested for germination to identify the most suitable conditions for securing reliable telial inoculum.
