Research Project: Genotyping Red Clover for Seed Production

Location: Dairy Forage Research

Project Number: 5090-21500-002-046-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 15, 2024
End Date: Mar 14, 2028

Objective:
1. Identify and characterize diverse germplasm resources of red clover for agronomic traits. 2. Assess genetic diversity and relationship of "common" red clover seeds from various seed growers’ to test genetic relatedness to single and double cut red clover using genotype-by-sequencing.

Approach:
Assemble a red clover diversity panel from the University of Saskatoon, USDA-ARS, and international genebanks, and characterize this germplasm for agronomic and seed yield traits in a spaced planted nursery. Also sample red clover seed from different seed growers. This seed will be used to assess genetic purity and diversity of current "common" red clover and also to determine this germplasm's relationship to other red clover germplasms.
