Research Project: Exploration of Tomato Epigenetics with Bene Sseeds

Location: Plant Gene Expression Center

Project Number: 2030-12210-003-007-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2024
End Date: Mar 31, 2029

Objective:
The Cooperator will be investigating the impact of tomato genetics and growth parameters on plant health. The cooperator will be using greenhouse space owned by the ARS. The ARS will assist in designing experiments and advise on tomato growth and molecular genetics analysis.

Approach:
The approach will include standard plant genetic research techniques and experimental design using commercially relevant tomato cultivars. The approach will involve growing a range of varieties and assessing their phenotypes for commercially relevant traits in both fruit (shape, size, color and flavor) and plant architecture (tall, vigorous, spindly, leggy and compact). The cooperator will provide materials for the research and monitor the plants. The ARS will help design the experiments and participate in the molecular genetics analysis. The ARS and Cooperator agree to collaborate on shared research project involving tomato genetics, epigenetics, and plant phenotyping. Both parties are actively engaged in independent research projects which explore plant genetics research in tomato and aim at improving crop health. The parties agree that meeting the objectives of this project will strengthen and enhance ongoing research within the scope of this agreement.
