Research Project: Professional Support for the 2024 Virtual Phytophthora Meeting, The Genus Phytophthora: Don't Change a Winning Concept

Location: Horticultural Crops Disease and Pest Management Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-22000-045-040-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: Apr 22, 2024
End Date: Jul 31, 2024

Objective:
To convene an international, web-based conference to discuss the taxonomy of Phytophthora pathogens.

Approach:
Funds are used to pay expenses for managing registration, web-hosting for a 2-day workshop on Phytophthora taxonomy and to host video recording on a website after the workshop by the American Phytopathological Society. Workshop description: The genus Phytophthora is a an ancient, historic, biologically and structurally cohesive and evolutionarily successful generic concept. It comprises more than 200 species divided over 12 clades and shows paraphyly with two downy mildew clades. This two-day, web-based APS workshop is convened to assess the scientific support for retaining the name Phytophthora for all major clades of the genus, as recommended in a recent review (https://imafungus.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s43008-022-00097-z). The workshop will explore the evolutionary, biological, taxonomic, regulatory, social and economic ramifications involved with potential outcomes. Panel discussions will develop a community consensus on Phytophthora taxonomy.
