Research Project: Introgression and Molecular Mapping of Fusarium Head Blight Resistance in Wheat and Barley Type of

Location: Wheat, Sorghum and Forage Research

Project Number: 3042-21000-035-013-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2024
End Date: Jul 31, 2028

Objective:
1) Incorporate Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistance gene Fhb7 into hard red winter and spring wheat, durum wheat, and barley. 2) Map and analyze epistatic effects of the common wheat-derived FHB resistance genes in durum wheat. 3) Develop FHB-resistant common and durum wheat germplasm.

Approach:
Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistance gene Fhb7 from source line 'WGC002' will be incorporate into adapted hard red spring and winter wheat and durum wheat accessions using a marker-assisted backcrossing breeding pipeline. The introgression lines developed through this approach will be evaluated for FHB resistance in the greenhouse and FHB nurseries in the field. 2) DNA markers will be developed and utilized to map and select Fhb7 resistance gene during the introgression process.
